Marriage to a Co-Worker in an Academic Setting

Elizabeth M. Street, Warren R. Street

Abstract

An analysis of the behavior of individuals and institutional policy toward married colleagues in an academic setting is presented. These policies and behaviors toward married couples and toward co-workers are directed by different stimuli and different histories. Escape and avoidance of these stimulus settings and distinctive formal and informal behaviors toward the married co-workers are among the results. The causes and effects are analogous to the difficulties accompanying the ascendance of women in the professional workplace.
